Indian Brook Reservoir
Melcar has successfully completed the installation of two 60in (1,524mm) tunnels through glacial till. The Melcar team faced many complications with this project including:
~ Geotechnical conditions - sluffying clay, cemented granite (glacial till), boulders larger than OD of the product pipe.
~ No pit - thrust blocks had to be fabricated and made in the field. This required extensive concrete and piling works to without the axial forces of thrusting the 60in steel tunnel forward.
~Weather conditions - during the course of this project, the North East experienced lower than normal temperatures, exaggerated by splitting winds and excessive freezes.
Because Melcar had to bore from the outside into a pre-cast vault, line and grade requirements had no margin of error.
